2009 National Summit

On April 14, 2008, Mayors Against Illegal Guns held the coalition's 2008 national summit in Washington, DC.

Mayors and other representatives from cities around the country gathered to shine a spotlight on the problem of illegal guns flowing into America's cities.

Mayors unveiled a new television advertisement drawing attention to the bipartisan common ground that exists between all 3 presidential candidates when it comes to protecting Americans from crimes committed with illegal guns.

Wal-Mart and the bi-partisan coalition announced at the summit that Wal-Mart, the largest seller of firearms in the nation, has adopted the new Responsible Firearms Retailer Partnership, a 10-point code that will help ensure that guns do not fall into the wrong hands.

Mayors also proposed common sense ways to improve the enforcement of federal laws designed to keeps guns out of the hands of criminals, discussed ideas for new state laws to help fight illegal gun trafficking and gun crime, and shared information about effective local policies and enforcement strategies in their cities.
