Close the Gun Show Loophole & Repeal the Tiahrt Amendments

The Obama administration has proposed a reform to the Tiahrt trace data restriction, restoring full access for law enforcement to the trace database. The proposal takes no action on other restrictions on background check data and inventory monitoring.

April 2009 - The Mayors Against Illegal Guns coalition hails the re-introduction of legislation to close the loophole in background checks that enables criminals to buy guns from unlicensed gun dealers. Mayors Against Illegal Guns also re-launched the ProtectPolice.org campaign to urge Congress to repeal the Tiahrt Amendments that hide critical data about illegal gun trafficking from law enforcement.

New Data Shows Terror Watch List Suspects Able to Purchase Guns 230 Times in 2006
April 2009 - The Mayors Against Illegal Guns coalition highlights newly released FBI data that documents 230 occasions in 2006 where persons on the violent gang and terrorist watch list were able to purchase guns because of gaps in the gun background check system.

Coalition Releases First of Its Kind Report About Illegal Gun Trafficking
December 2008 - The Mayors Against Illegal Guns coalition released a landmark report that reveals previously unreported trends in the movement of illegal guns across state lines. This report, The Movement of Illegal Guns In America: The Link between Gun Laws and Interstate Trafficking, analyzes state-by-state 2006 and 2007 trace data released by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and finds that states that supply interstate crime guns at the highest rates have comparatively weak gun laws.

Mayor Menino Addresses Cleveland Gun Forum
Dec - Coalition Co-Chair Tom Menino of Boston met with a group of mayors and local law enforcement officials from northern Ohio to discuss various topics related to the fight against illegal guns in the region. Mayor Menino then gave a keynote address about illegal guns to a public audience gathered at the Cleveland House of Blues. 29 new mayors from Ohio joined the coalition at the event. Also, participants discussed ways that law enforcement can partner with community groups to fight illegal gun trafficking.

Wal-Mart Joins Coalition to Form the Responsible Firearms Retailer Partnership
The coalition has formed a landmark partnership with Wal-Mart - the nation's largest firearms retailer - that includes a 10-point voluntary code that will help ensure that prohibited buyers are not able to acquire guns.

Pennsylvania Mayors Working Together On Lost and Stolen Gun Reporting Ordinances
September 16 - The mayors of seven cities and towns in Pennsylvania - Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, Lancaster, Reading, Pottsville and York - announced today that they will work together to pass ordinances requiring the reporting of lost and stolen guns to police within 72 hours of discovering the gun is missing. The cities are working with Philadelphia, where Mayor Nutter enacted a similar lost and stolen gun reporting law in July.

Congressional Task Force on Illegal Guns Hearing
April 15 - Today, the bipartisan Congressional Task Force on Illegal Guns held a hearing to examine the problem of illegal gun trafficking. Mayors testified before the task force about common sense measures that Congress can take to fight the flow of illegal guns into America's cities. The task force also heard testimony from witnesses with direct knowledge of the illegal gun trade.

2008 National Submit

2008 National Summit in Washington
Mayors Against Illegal Guns held its 2008 national summit in Washington, DC. The coalition announced a landmark partnership with Wal-Mart to put in place practices to reduce the risk of illegal gun purchases. The coalition also unveiled a new television advertisement drawing attention to the bipartisan common ground that exists between all 3 presidential candidates when it comes to protecting Americans from crimes committed with illegal guns.

Florida Conference: 20 New Mayors and a New Coalition of State Legislators Against Illegal Guns Announced
March 3, 2008 - Mayors Against Illegal Guns convened in Florida to address issues including the economic costs of gun violence, the role of state legislatures, and the importance of community involvement in combating illegal gun crimes. The coalition also announced 20 new Florida members as well as a new coalition of State Legislators Against Illegal Guns.

Coalition Hails Introduction of The Firearms Information Use Act of 2008
Read the Joint Statement from Coalition Co-Chairs New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino on the introduction of the Firearms Information Use Act of 2008. The bill strikes the Tiahrt Amendment – a rider that restricts the access of cities and states to aggregate crime gun trace data - from appropriations legislation.
