Mayors Against Illegal Guns Announces Regional Data Sharing Initiative
Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon hosted 16 mayors and city representatives from 7 states at a regional violence reduction summit where the coalition announced plans to share crime gun data in the Mid-Atlantic region. At the conference, mayors discussed the escalating crime trends and the costs of gun violence and other strategies to reduce violent crime, including intelligence gathering.

2008 Campaign Survey Mayors Against Illegal Guns Sends Survey to Presidential Candidates
December 9 - The bi-partisan coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns today announced that it has sent a survey on the topic of illegal guns to all candidates for president of the United States. The survey is designed to elicit the views of presidential candidates on the issue of illegal guns to both better inform coalition mayors and to focus public attention on this vital issue of national concern.

Coalition Statements on Congressional Action
On December 19, 2007, Congress passed legislation to help ensure that the records of mentally ill persons already prohibited from purchasing firearms are in the federal background check system. On that same day, Congress defeated a more insidious version of the Tiahrt Amendment, the appropriations rider that restricts the access of cities and states to aggregate crime gun trace data.

Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels Mayor Nickels Hosts State Summit and Forms Coalition to Reduce Gun Violence
December 3, 2007 - Coalition Mayor Greg Nickels of Seattle hosted a summit of representatives from communities around Washington State to form a partnership to reduce gun violence in the state. Over 160 Participants discussed a number of issues from gun violence risk factors to state legislative proposals.

US Conference of Mayors President Mayor Doug Palmer joined Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor Jerramiah Healy and Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) to announce support from members of the coalition for legislation that will keep guns out of the hands of terrorists. The bill was introduced by Senator Lautenberg and Representative Peter King (R-NY) and allows the Department of Justice to prohibit anyone with suspected ties to terrorism from buying a gun.

The event comes on the eve of a crucial vote in the House Appropriations Committee. The mayors oppose the Tiahrt Amendment because of how it restricts the access of cities and law enforcement to gun trace data, an essential crime fighting tool.
