It was a good week for sensible gun control. The Senate
turned aside by two votes an amendment to the military authorization bill that
would have allowed gun owners with valid permits from one state to carry
concealed weapons in other states.
This was a stupid piece of legislation for several
reasons. Why does anyone outside of law enforcement need to be carrying
concealed guns across state lines? And what about state rights? This
dunderheaded plan would have totally undermined the states that opt for tough
gun laws. Republicans hypocritically set aside their philosophical belief in
state rights in a bow to the gun lobby.
Gun owners need to obey state gun laws.
Period.
